A Few Forgotten Women Celebrate International Day of the Girl

For this year’s International Day of the Girl, members of the A Few Forgotten Women team, have put together a combination of videos, podcasts and articles for you to enjoy at your leisure. You can access them here.

Margaret Robert’s podcast ‘Can Freda Skate?’ was inspired by a letter pasted into the register of the Yorkshire Residential School for the Deaf in Doncaster. There is a detailed article from Ann Simcock about the girls of the Penkhull Cottage Homes, Stoke-on-Trent, which was set up as an alternative to workhouse provision. Wendy Durston has provided us with an interesting article about the Grange School of Housewifery. Then there’s a video about the Trubweeke School of Domestic Science at Cuckfield Park from Janice Brinley Codd.

Finally, there is a podcast telling the story of Lucy Adderley and her female ancestors. Lucy Adderley is also an advance story for our next Forgotten Women Friday on 8 November, when we will be looking at some of the staff and inmates from homes for Fallen Women across the country. We are now actively seeking volunteers to help on that day. Please let us know if you’d like to help with this research. There is more information about the day here. An you can contact us through our website.
