The lives of the women on this page were touched by prostitution, or an accusation of prostitution. Some were prostitutes themselves, others were affected because family members were involved in prostitution. You can access their stories by clicking on the women's names below. There is also information on the page relating to our research that focussed on Refuges for Fallen Women, although not all 'fallen women' were prostitutes in the modern sense of the word, even if they may have been regarded as such by society at the time.

These women were directly impacted by the Contagious Diseases Act of 1864, which allowed for the forcible examination of women found loitering in a port or near a barracks. The jurisdiction was later extended, before the act was repealed in 1886.
